Terracing Demonstrations Draw Farmers to Winterfield and Arthur
Two terracing demonstrations by Simon Vanderwoude and Gary Mielke attracted local farmers in Winterfield and Arthur townships. George Becker of the Soil Conservation Service led the events, outlining contour layouts and five inch per hundred foot grades. Tractors powered the work, yielding fourteen hundred feet of terrace and a quarter mile of sod water ways, with Mielke using three tractors to speed progress. Terracing aims to reduce runoff by trapping water on slopes, allowing more soil absorption and crop benefit.
