Confinement farming predicted to rise in Midwest
Michigan State University economist Doneéth says livestock rearing will shift to confinement in 10 to 15 years with larger, specialized farms. He notes reduced per unit costs for equipment and buildings and tighter environmental control, especially for hogs, dairy, and feeder cattle. A Michigan farmer already uses confinement for dairy cows, steers, hogs, and crop farming with minimal fencing.
