State to Curtail Fish Hatcheries Under McFadden Plan

The Department of Conservation will close four state hatcheries by next year, with two in Paris and Grayling converted to multi use field offices. Watersmeet and Benton Harbor will shut down, staff reassigned, keeping most in their communities. The move follows the McFadden Plan to shift from stocking legal sized trout to planting sub legal trout in lakes, saving about 250000 annually for other fish management projects.

Paris hatchery to shift from trout to fish program

MacMullan says current transportation methods and facilities will meet the needs of a new fish program. The Paris hatchery near Big Rapids Mecosta county will stop trout production this fall after planting commitments are met. Three fish culturists will move to lake and stream work and a site maintenance man habitat biologist forester and fire control officer will join the Paris field office. Part of the hatchery site becomes a county park while a trout display pond remains on site.
