Leo Hugo Kruger explains a compact two-tube short wave set costing about 15 dollars to hear KDKA directly. The design covers 60 to 150 meters with a long aerial optional. notes on components, tuning, and avoiding harmonics are given along with a parts list and panel dimensions.
Radio receiver output is improved by placing a choke coil across the output with inductance 50 to 100 henrys. A four microfarad condenser in series with the loudspeaker allows alternating audio to pass while DC goes through the choke. This arrangement raises plate voltage capability and protects the speaker from burnout.
A choke call with about 120 turns on a one inch diameter tube, wired in series with the plate circuit of a regenerative receiver, tends to make the set oscillate more readily and steadily.
To recharge a dry cell bore two 1/4 inch holes three inches deep on opposite sides of the generator connection. Fill holes with cider vinegar and plug with paraffin.
Testing advice warns against using an ammeter on B batteries as it risks damaging the meter and shortening the battery life. Use a voltmeter for most checks, reserve brief ammeter use for large dry cells. Storage batteries require a hydrometer reading of electrolyte gravity to assess charge. High resistance voltmeters help determine the tube lighting voltage.
Fixed resistance values of about 250 000 or 500 000 ohms and condensers of 0.0005 or 0.001 mfd placed in the secondaries of audio transformers can clarify reception and reduce treble exaggeration. Combinations of these components often convert a weak amplifier into a fairly acceptable one, though they do not fix faulty amplifier design.
To pinpoint noise in a radio receiver, disconnect the aerial and ground wires. If noise stays high even when broadcast music stops, the fault likely lies in the receiving set such as loose connections faulty batteries or a defective tube. Shake the ground wire near the connection to rule out a bad connection as the cause.
If your set cannot tune to short wavelengths, tap the secondary of the inductance coil on the filament side with a tap-switch arrangement. This lets you cut in and out at will to reach desired wavelengths.
A ground substitute described as an efficient counterpoise is likened to a wire fence, forming a practical stand in for earth and providing stability through its protective function.
