Clare County Board of Commissioners approved a budget of 704 611.68 after a public hearing and last minute meetings. Original requests totaling 930 909 were reduced by 226 298 to fit anticipated revenue with John Brubaker and staff guiding the process.
Okays 704,611 dollar budget as budget committee reports to the board. The panel presented the plan last Monday and recessed to finalize it. Two county departments gain, nine stay the same, others cut. Fixed operating costs stay regulated by state rules. One last year funded item receives no grant.
The Designs for Living Homemakers School begins at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Clare Elementary Auditorium. Miss Kay Jepsen, a nationally known home maker, will direct demonstrations on cooking and fabric care with more than 30 door prizes and discount coupons. Admission is free. seating is first come. The program is sponsored by The Clare Sentinel.
Clare plans a youth development program to aid low income students through Sixcap, a federally funded group. Ken Dennis of Sixcap outlined eight steps to form the program, including an adult advisory council and work experiences for about 500 youths aged 16 to 21. Planners meet Wednesday at Clare City Hall.
Clare city officials approved eight building permits at a regular meeting at Clare City Hall. City manager Glen Cain said city crews will flush water mains this week twice nightly beginning Wednesday at 9 p.m., with further flushing Thursday and Friday into the early morning hours.
Local business and professional people honor farmers of Clare County with a 21 gun salute praising industrious habits and soil knowledge. The event reflects community support for agricultural workers.
The Clare Chamber of Commerce board endorsed a three week drive seeking 700000 to fund state required hospital improvements at Clare Osteopathic Hospital. About 250000 has been pledged. directors urge all citizens to contribute financially or volunteer time to ensure continued operation.
The hospital board endorses a fundraising drive to raise money for required improvements under a state order. Bonds of 1000 and 500 dollars at eight percent for 15 years will fund the work. If the license is not renewed the hospital cannot operate on a non cash basis and may close, affecting emergency and routine care in Clare County and nearby areas.
Next year's operating budget totals 1 419 567 up from 1 247 937 and funds for the December 9 bond election to finance a new elementary school. A special October 26 meeting will plan the bond issue and voters will decide on the 2.2 million bond. Board also set elementary grade chairmen and authorized bids on three school bus chassis with a 10 percent insurance increase.
