Many Hunters Active Across North Woods Season
Northbound deer traffic grew heavier before the 1944 season opening and southbound traffic peaked the first weekend as many hunters could only hunt early due to war duties. Fatalities reached eighteen by Tuesday night with eight gunshot deaths and heart attacks common. Several notable sales and sightings accompany the season, including stolen buck, a 125 pound kill by Vaughn Lewis, and multiple large bucks bagged by local residents and visitors. The Harold Fleming Big Buck contest drew strong interest with 1033 licenses sold and 1711 hunters registered by last Thursday noon.
