Preserving Fence Posts From Home Grown Woods
Michigan farmers are advised to use inferior wood from their woodlots for fence posts. P J Gibson urges preservation with inexpensive methods to extend life. H J Raphael notes cutting peeling in late spring or early summer and three months seasoning, then cold soak treatment with pentachlorophenol or copper naphthenate can triple service life. Farmers may request a mimeographed guide from the county agent.

Clipping Cows to Improve Milk Quality Advised
Don Murray of Michigan State College explains four benefits of clipping cows before winter: cleaner cows, less sediment in milk, lower bacteria counts, and easier lice control. He cites industry data showing reduced milk rejects and tests showing udder clipping plus washing lowers bacteria.

Urea Feeding for Livestock Highlights Carbohydrate Link
Questions on urea use in livestock feeds dominated a recent conference at Michigan State College. Dr C F Wuffman of ATSC warns against heavy urea feeding from dirty cattle and notes slower digesting urea could aid milk production. Hoefer at MSU cites beef cattle obtaining similar nitrogen from one pound of urea as from six pounds of soybean meal, but meal provides energy and minerals while urea does not. Urea should be fed with corn or other carbohydrates.
