Explaining the Trousseau How Dowry Shaped Early Marriages
The term trouser see originates from trusse meaning a small bundle. It refers to a dowry given to compensate the groom for the bride’s purchase price. The hope chest mirrored this idea and a groom could refuse the ceremony if the dowry seemed unsatisfactory.
