Distribution may start Monday to donors who contributed nearly $350,000 toward a Clare Osteopathic Hospital fund drive. The total donations amount to about half of the $700,000 needed for improvements across several hospital wings.
A Beaverton man, 76 year old Harry J. Kaul of Route 1, was killed when a two car collision occurred at the Old U.S. 27 and Beaverton Road intersection Monday evening. Injured were Calvin E. Barber 18 of Farwell Mary Warner 19 and Nancy Hoffman 16 of Harrison. Barber and Warner treated and released from Clare Osteopathic Hospital. Hoffman remains hospitalized in good condition. State troopers from Mt Pleasant Post are investigating. no tickets issued.
The Clare Chamber of Commerce held its annual dinner meeting with about 150 members and guests attending at the Doherty Hotel. New three year term directors named: A J Docherty John Quinan Bill Ulrich and Phil Schneider filling vacancies and terms. A tribute was paid to Roy E Cimmerer and Joseph A McKay who recently died for their civic support. Continued on page 16.
Clare County officials and 13 neighboring counties heard Esse n tial site needs for new plants at West Branch. Consumers Power Michigan Consolidated Gas Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad and the Office of Economic Expansion outlined water and sewer, roads, airport access and other guarantees needed before industry will relocate manufacturing to less populated areas like Clare County.
The Clare School Board details a $2.2 million bond proposal to remodel the elementary and build a new K-4 school. It approves three bus chassis bids totaling 16023, hires temporary secretarial help for voter rolls, and plans a Q A period on local radio before the December 4 election. The district will regrade and expand the north end of Clare High School parking with 185 cubic yards of gravel at an estimated $700.
The Waterfront weekly in Lake City with a 3700 circulation joins The Clare Sentinel group. Alfred R. Bransdorfer becomes publisher of The Waterfront while remaining editor and publisher of the Osceola County Herald. Lake City Waterfront Inc. owns it, with officers Milliman Bransdorfer Jones McVay.
Alexander T. Strange II, newly elected judge of the 17th Probate District Court, outlines plans for organizing operations starting January 1, 1971. No changes to court personnel or staff. Juvenile Officers Marjory Lawrence and Lyle Swanson will serve both Clare and Gladwin Counties, focusing on serious issues involving girls and families.
Clare County Plan ning Commission members will hold a 7:30 p.m. work session at the Clare County Courthouse in Harrison to review a 119 page 15 section preliminary zoning ordinance draft. A monthly conference on juvenile problems will continue in Clare and Gladwin Counties. Judge Strange notes he will devote full time to new court programs and unpaid volunteers to assist at risk children and families.
