Spring sowing warns against seed bargain traps
Farmers warned that bargain seed schemes prey on hard times with misleading marketing. A Michigan State College analysis found a so called Star Bargain alfalfa seed containing 96 percent alfalfa but 86 percent of that was worthless brown seed and 1 percent had 10 weed types, priced at $10.92 per bushel yet actual value near $20. The second lot, advertised as bargain mix of alfalfa Alsike clover and timothy, was 80.5 percent timothy with low grade companions and many weeds, priced over $12 per 100 pounds. Last year cheap certified seed proved to be false, revealing only downgraded stock with weed content.
