Midwest blizzard fans the snow on March 17 18 and 19 catching readers by surprise. Schools closed roads emptied and traffic slowed as a sharp storm hit with zero visibility and drifting snow. The Old Farmer's Almanac predictions are cited while outlooks for March and April remain unsettled.
Women bowlers enter the tournament's second weekend as Welded Construction tops after 81 teams bowled. Campbell Verney Bosink Ins and Holley Jets vie for second with 2824 to 2821 while singles see Karolyn Christner lead with 664 and Betty Walters 661. Betty Stark owns 1468 pins actual. Stark and Walters lead in pace with 200 games over the weekend. Holley Jets and Hilltop Bar tie for handicap honors at 101.
A 1965 handbook outlines Michigan Week May 16 22 with facts figures showing Michigan as a sovereign nation would be the richest. The Michigan Week Theme Committee chaired by University of Michigan vice president Michael Radock oversees the celebration and distribution of the handbook.
Don Reynolds a Consumers Power Co. salesman for Mt. Pleasant and Clare area led Michigan in Frigidaire Sales Corp campaign from December 26 to February 24. He sold 59 Frigidaire units, ranking ahead of men from Flint Jackson Saginaw and other divisions. He and his wife will attend a Detroit dinner and theater party in May.
Joy Rawson daughter of Mr and Mrs Allen Rawson is named valedictorian and Terry Davis son of Mr and Mrs Stanley Davis salutatorian at Farwell Area High School. Joy posts a 3 82 average and plans to attend Central Beneen University. Terry finished 3 73 and plans for Michigan State University mechanical engineering. Other honor students include Judy Bauer Dean Beavers Nancy De Forest Teresa Sandow Sandy Sprague Bette Wirnarski Linda Smith Diane Denton and Steve Grim. In Clare the City Commission approves a $25 000 purchase of a new fire fighting unit from Howe apparatus to be mounted on an international chassis with delivery expected in September.
The Red Cross Blood Bank bloodmobile will visit the Harrison City Garage on Monday March 22 from 12 noon to 6 pm to meet the county quota. Donors may give blood without appointments and the local committee requests public cooperation.
Eight candidates qualified for the April 5 election to fill three Clare City Commission seats. Incumbents Glen Cain and George Wisler seek reelection. Cain is Clare mayor. Former members Mack Thomson and Edward Vernon Walters also run along with Roy A Dunbar Willard Koch Melville Stebelton and Robert N Walters. Haley declines candidacy, ending long service. Tim Cotter and Tom Bradley will also take seats with expiring terms.
Michigan Bell Telephone Company reports 298403 dollars in wages paid to 40 employees who worked in the Clare district during 1964. Clarence B. Riedel, manager, confirms the figures.
Fran Carncross rolled a 633 series for a season high in the Ladies Friday Night League at Gateway Lanes on March 12. The Ford-O-Matics bowler, sponsored by Dan McDonald Ford, posted 215 210 208 with a 4-5-7 split, aiming for a possible Gateway record. She also has a 600+ in three leagues this season and carries a 171 average across two leagues.
The planning committee for the Annual Spring Home Extension Tour met to organize a trip to Alma for April 13 with further details to follow. The Achievement day committee also convened.
Vernon Township hears concerns about rising population and subdivision driving the need for a township code. Fred Ackerman leads a committee to study needs and present them to the Township Board, aiming for balanced rules that protect property without undue hardship.
Michigan State University extension dairy specialist Clint Meadows visits Clare County today March 18 at Arthur Township Hall 12 45 PM as featured speaker. He offers tools for dairy breeding and production records and is linked with DHI testing. An 11 30 AM dinner at Arthur Center Church raises funds, part of farm management meetings co sponsored by Clare and Gladwin counties.
