Reminder states that nearly all inland Michigan waters will close to fishing for muskellunge northern pike and walleyed pike during the spawning season from March 15 to April 29. An exception exists for a Muskegon River stretch downstream from Rogers Dam in Mecosta County.
The Conservation Department cautions that lower Michigan ice is thinning as temperatures rise. Southern lakes have opened up while northern shores show breakups. fishermen in the upper peninsula may also be forced to exit early. Shanties must be removed to avoid a $50 fine or 30 days in jail. Fishermen are urged to clear litter and cans after moving their shanties.
Mrs Beulah Bodkins and Mrs Irene Clute remain under observation at Mt Pleasant Community Hospital with some improvement reported. Elk Lake resident Burnice McKillop staying at the Clute home during Mrs Clute's absence. Local visits include Harrison and Midland guests with various Sunday calls. A youth dinner and Fort Bureau gathering were noted along with plans for a Tiial Urban diner event and a fish supper at the church basement.
Michigan State University begins a field study on white tailed deer behavior under a grant from the Lower Michigan Pulpwood Research Association. The project traps, tags, and releases deer to observe social structures and movements in the Pen apena club country area, amid about a million acres reserved for hunting and recreation.
Mrs Maude McDonald and family hosted and visited relatives in Saginaw Rosebush and Mt Pleasant. The Lennox and Walker families shared Sunday gatherings and supper with friends in their communities. Other calls included visits to the McDonalds and Epples and stops at Lilly Hubble in Coleman and the Taggart household last week.
