Alewife Clean Sweep Aids Lake Michigan Beaches

Michigan reports 37.6 miles of public Lake Michigan beaches host nearly four million visitors yearly. In 1967 a severe alewife dieoff overwhelmed beach cleanup. Prison inmate labor and U S Job Corps crews helped, plus volunteers. This year four mechanical cleaners and planned labor will operate, with attempts to remove alewives before reaching shore and commercial trawling sweeps offshore. Salmon eat alewives and may reduce the problem over time, but emergency cleanup will be needed for several summers.
