Wildlife Benefits From Warm February In Michigan

Moderate temperatures in February aided Michigan wildlife during a harsh season. Snow remains heavy in the western upper peninsula with 30 inches in places and 10 inches in Marquette, while the lower peninsula shows snow retreating. Deer roam freely in the south yet stay in swamps in the north, and a starved deer reported in Baraga district raises concern for upper peninsula populations. Squirrels had feared acorn shortages, but with snow removed they adapt to other foods. The white fur of snowshoe hares makes them conspicuous to predators and observers alike.
