City splits 3 2 on zoning vote over Hemlock Schoolcrest lots

The Clare Plan Board rejected rezoning on Hemlock at Schoolcrest from R 1 to R 2 amid strong neighbor opposition. The City Commission upheld the plan board 3 2, with Doherty Beck voting no and Mayor Smith Stephenson Johnson voting yes. A separate measure approved a $350 000 clinic near the hospital despite parking concerns.

Farwell High Names Valedictorian and Salutatorian for 1977

Farwell Area High School announces the top graduates for the class of 1977. Valedictorian is Andrew M. Sikkema, a 3.54 GPA student with 24 college credits, planning civil engineering at Michigan Tech after MMCC. Salutatorian is Stacy Rickett, a Modern Dance participant planning computer science at Central Michigan University.

Plans for Week of Irish Culture in Clare

Clare gears up for the second Wee Bit of Ireland week beginning Monday March 14 with promotions by local merchants. Irish Committee tickets offer a trip for two to Ireland with a St Patrick Day drawing on March 17 at the Doherty Hotel and a gala buffet and dance. A March 17 parade at 2 30 p m, an Irish Ball March 19, and school poster contests feature in town events.

Pioneers clinch district title in 76 50 victory over Meridan Mustangs

Clare Pioneers dominated the district final at Sanford Meridian defeating Meridian Mustangs 76 to 50. Gary Roth led Clare with 20 points and 17 rebounds while Tim Bailey and Kurt Swan added double figures as Clare earns regional clash with Reed City in Roscommon.
