What Became of the Rain and Soil Loss in Clare County
County agent notes 2.22 inches of rain in four days and compares typical monthly totals. He warns topsoil erosion on slopes, cites 10 to 30 tons lost per season, and promotes sod waterways seeded with brome and June grass to reduce runoff. A recommended mix is 10 pounds brome and 1 pound June grass per acre, with manure or straw and 200 pounds per acre of 3-12-12 fertilizer to help establishment.
Seeding Reed Canary Grass For Wet Land Pastures
Farmers with mucky spring land can seed Reed Canary grass now while water is out. The grass tolerates submergence and yields rich pasture once above water. Use marsh plow equipment, 4-6 lbs per acre, mix with timothy first year, and apply 300 lbs acre of 0-9-27 fertilizer to boost soil nutrients in mucky soils.
