Moisture in Grass Silage Big Problem
Dr Stephan T Dexter notes moisture content is key to silage quality. Harvest tall forage at normal hay stages to avoid wilting. Early bloom or immature cuts require longer wilting. over dry silage packs poorly and spoils. Molasses can aid preservation in damp alfalfa. 40 to 80 pounds per ton recommended. Short cut length and tight silo walls improve packing and storage.
