Clare News Notes Reveal Growing Town and Early Settlements
A survey of Clare reveals rising commerce with potatoes at 80 cents per bushel and butter at ten cents a pound. Reports mention new business prospects, a planned summer block, and a growing town aroma with boot blacks and chimneys sweeps. Early settlers John Nicola, Peter Alger, and James Bush started hotels. Buck and Peter Callam opened stores. Clare’s role shifted through Isabella and Mecosta counties. The Plains road opening is seen as boosting settlement, while education began with a 1870 schoolhouse built of logs later replaced by a frame structure with modern improvements.
