Freight Rate Needs to Hit 6 Percent Return, IC C Hearings Begun
The Republican Publicity Association says hearings before the Interstate Commerce Commission aim to determine how much freight rates must rise to secure a 6 percent return on railroad property. It estimates an $1,017,000,000 earnings increase is needed, implying a 20 to 30 percent freight rate rise. The group argues private capital requires a fair return and government ownership would require higher taxes to cover deficits.
