The six day Clare County Free Fair will open July 31 in Harrison with harness racing, midway attractions, exhibits, free entertainment, a prize livestock parade and sale. Highlights include an auto thrill show, bicycle drawings on August 1 and 4, and a Junior Livestock auction on Friday evening.
A formal ceremony at Prince Of Peace Lutheran Church in Clare Sunday July 30 installs Rev. Fred Gersch as pastor succeeding Rev. Charles Smith. The service begins at 3 00 p m with sermon by Rev. Lionel Skamser and liturgy by Rev. Leonard Newman. The Gerschs reside in Clare after a 1964 church founding and a new church building along US 27.
The Clare Board of Education announced the signing Tuesday of Gary Rayburn as head football coach for the 1967 season. He has taught at Clare since 1963 and served on the coaching staff including JV football golf and reserve basketball. Rayburn presently is administrative assistant to Superintendent Richard Snyder. The vacancy followed Deb Nolan’s two season tenure as coach.
Frank T. LaGoe urged citizens and organizations to join a fundraising drive for Clare Hospital to prevent a cut to 33 beds by late 1968. The campaign aims to mobilize volunteers to meet a critical need for a $600,000 expansion, funding the hospital’s 45 mile service area serving over 50,000 people.
Harrison youngsters in the Headstart program enjoyed hot breads during lunches this week. Clare Brown of the Extension Service in Clare and Gladwin counties described quick oven casseroled bread and whole wheat bread demonstrations. Mothers took home coffee cakes as this was the final class of the program.
Invitation manager Ken Barnes of Clare Chamber of Commerce promotes Clare in the East Michigan Guide to Summer time Fun. The two color full page advertises camping lakes sports and recreation, lodging dining and industrial sites. Barnes mails back lists of recreation spots churches resorts cabins fishing and hunting to tourists and visitors.
State officials urge a $15-20 million plan to build five trout and salmon hatcheries and install fish passageways. The goal is to boost annual plantings to about 30 million fish to curb alewife overabundance in Lakes Michigan and Huron within five to ten years. Construction on the Little Manistee River Hatchery near Stronach is set to finish by year’s end 1968, with both state and federal funds secured.
The Garfield Memorial Library announces new programs including a story hour for children aged 4 to 7 led by Mrs Barbara Perrine on Friday afternoons from 2:00 to 3:00 starting July 28. A September 1 film loan program offers 16mm civic films with two week advance notice for delivery. A new record collection is now available with a listening room and seven day loan period.
Mil-Jo Enterprises proposes building and leasing low cost home units in Clare. The company said last week that inquiries from the public rose after publicity and coupons in The Sentinel. A few more serious requests could trigger construction with an OK to start.
A survey of Mid Michigan Community College District 1968 graduates shows broad interest in a local community college. Dean Curtis Murton notes most plan continuing education and many would consider MMCC if classes start this fall. Potential offerings include transfer and terminal courses, remedial work, and pilot programs in existing facilities while campus plans progress. Francis J. Mitchell formerly of Muskegon and East Lansing signs a contract to become Dean of Applied Arts at Mid Michigan Community College. He is a specialist in administration of vocational and technical education and job preparation. Mitchell has four years as a technical education consultant for the Michigan State Department of Education. He advised on programs for community colleges and public agencies. Previously he taught machine shop apprenticeship and adult education in Saginaw.
Clare Little League All Stars earned a regional final berth by beating Farwell 4-3 in extra innings at the July 18 clash and then routing Gladwin 7-0 and Bay City South End 5-0. They face Bay City N W tomorrow at Defoe Park.
