Annual Clare County Fair Opens August First

Clare County Fair prepares to open on Sunday August 1 with Running and Speed Horse Racing in eighteen classes and a premium display. Evening shows include the Clare County Ministerial Association program and Latin Messagers, with bingo, clown acts, and country music performances by Toni Ingraham. Other events include 4-H demonstrations, horse costume judging, livestock auctions, pet parade, tractor pull, and a Dapper Dan Fleenor stunt show funded by advance ticket sales starting Saturday.

Clare teen fights to save 1918 Doherty house from clinic plans

An 18 year old Cynthia Methner of Coleman leads a bid to save Clare's 1918 Doherty house at 717 N McEwan from demolition for a surgical clinic by Dr. Shurlow. She has consulted officials and offers moving the house or relocate the clinic. She urges local citizens to act.

Prosecutor Warns Of Bad Checks

Prosecuting Attorney Richard Allen warns that summer increases bad checks. Merchants should require ID, mark checks, and observe sellers to identify them in court if needed. Avoid third party or out of area checks and beware checks large compared to a purchase. He urges verifying with banks to prevent losses.

Harrison District millage vote set for July polls

Harrison School District voters will go to the polls on July 27 to decide 1.7 mills for one year. The proposal divides into three propositions: 0.55 mills for general operations, 0.8 mills for building repairs and improvements, and 0.35 mills for curriculum improvements.

Summer Superstar Contest Set For Shamrock Park

During the week of July 26 30 Shamrock Park hosts a five event Superstar Contest with yahtzee checkers races softball throw and croquet the top scorer wins a prize. A picnic for attending children closes the program July 30 from 11 00 am to 1 00 pm.

Neighbor Saves Farwell Boy in Pool Rescue

A Farwell child fell into a 4 foot pool while playing with siblings. Neighbor Elmer Godwin, aided by mother Mrs. Cando and brother Jody, performed mouth to mouth resuscitation until the boy revived. Michigan State Police Trooper Endelman arrived, the boy was taken to Clare Osteopathic Hospital and released.

Open Space Ruling Sought for Land in Clare County

Clare County Board of Commissioners consider placing 1748.9 acres owned by Delos Hamlin of Hatton Township into Open Space Easement. The move would freeze development and taxes, with possible future tax implications and penalties if withdrawn. Dennis Hall of the DNR explained procedures. The board will vote at the August 2 meeting.
