Sunday School Movement Spurs Faith Then Education Across America
The Sunday School movement began with the Raikes plan in England and spread in the United States. Methodist Francis Asbury helped found schools in 1786, facing hostility from a Charleston preacher and a Connecticut pastor. By 1817 there were 100 schools, the American Sunday School Union formed in 1824, and by the 1830s vast fundraising and missionary efforts followed, with Paxson riding 100000 miles to establish 1314 schools reaching over 83 thousand pupils and teachers.
