Help Wanted in Grand Traverse Cherry Orchards This Summer

Cool weather delayed cherry ripening in the Grand Traverse area by about two weeks and spring frosts destroyed 80 percent of this year's crop. A total harvest of about twelve million pounds will need around 6000 pickers. County agent Carl Hemstreet says growers welcome local families who have assisted in past years. Pickers can buy a reasonable amount of cherries for home canning, with prices starting around 50 cents per lug and adjusted to ensure fair wages. Interested workers should contact the Emergency Farm Labor Office at 1025 So Union, US-31, phone 133, for assignments to orchards needing help.
