Pasture and Grain Feeds for High Producing Dairy Cows
An extension bulletin explains dairy cows on pasture need grain to meet energy. For cows yielding over 20 pounds daily, a 400 pounds corn 200 pounds oats mix feeds at one pound per 4.5 to 5 pounds milk depending on breed, with dry pasture lowering protein. When pasture dries, add 100 pounds cottonseed meal and adjust to one pound grain per pound fat. Abundant pasture aids, as cows require energy beyond grazing.
