The Class of 1929 at Clare Public School plans a reunion at Wilson State Park on July 18. Members are invited with families and asked to bring two dishes to pass along with sandwiches and table service. Ice cream and drinks will be provided.
Over the 1949 to 1953 period Clare county reported 15 people diagnosed with tuberculosis per the Michigan Tuberculosis Association. The association estimates each active TB case costs about 15 dollars.
Mt. Vernon Grange will confer the third and fourth degrees next Monday evening. Master Fred Sexton announced the schedule and invited members to attend the ceremony.
County Agent Paul Gibson said a small army worm infestation was found at Ray Houghton farm south of Brown Corners. Houghton sprayed with a hand sprayer but no extensive spraying was needed. Floyd Norcutt could spray wide areas if required. Farmers should monitor corn oats and wheat and report worm sightings to the County Agents office. Gratiot County also reported extensive worm work last week.
The American Cancer Society cautions that, while not conclusive, evidence links cigarette smoking to higher lung cancer risk. Data show rising male lung cancer deaths from 1930 to 1950 alongside increased cigarette use, with mouse experiments indicating cancer risk from smoke and fuel fumes. The society notes varying study figures but urges cautious interpretation and continued research. A 1952 National Lung Cancer Committee was formed and education efforts expanded for earlier diagnosis.

Fingerprints collected or identified: 4 758 criminal and 2 499 non criminal. 23 persons identified. 683 concealed weapon permit applicants. 74 with criminal records. Identification Bureau now has 3 717 644 fingerprints on file including 1 773 098 non crim.
Isabella County Grange announces its annual picnic on Sunday June 18 at Weuchter's Landing, Hight Point Lake. Attendees bring dinners and drinks. ice cream provided by Isabella Pomona Grange. A large turnout is expected with an afternoon program and 1:30 lunch start. Swimming will be available for attendees.
Wilma Randall of Clare placed first in a local IGA contest with her entry stating I like these IGA brands because. She wins a $30 liquidizer and advances to regional judging with Mrs Donald Horden and Mrs Flora Walter finishing second and third at Witbeck's Super Market, the local IGA representative.
Sunny weather expected on July 25 as Clare County Farm Bureau members prepare a potluck dinner at the Claré Tourist area. Tables will be ready for a large gathering with a $30 per person contribution noted.
Ruby Hughes and Harold Ruby were elected president and treasurer of the Clare School Board at a Monday meeting. The board continued the two mill tax increase for operating costs but reduced debt retirement by one mill to 19 mills total next year. The district plans 209000 in expenditures with 135000 for instruction, and expects to hire one junior high teacher and raise teacher salaries to state levels.

WWTV will begin construction this summer and fall on a 1,282 foot tower to be built by the Truscon Steel Division. The project, part of a 200000 expansion, will raise power to 104000 watts and extend service to 41 northern and central Michigan counties. Completion is planned near December 1, increasing signal reach across Muskegon Grand Rapids Saginaw and Bay City.
Franklin Perry Davis born December 23 1865 Logan County Ohio died July 3 1954 Orlando Florida after a short illness. He married Maggie C Harlan December 6 1886. Moved to Michigan 1902 farmed in Sheridan township taught school served as township clerk and county drain commissioner. Survived by five daughters one son nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Funeral July 10 1954 at Stephenson Funeral Home with Rev Leslie Nevíns, interment Cherry Grove.
United States Commissioner of Education Samuel Brownell will address the MSC School of Education in the Educational Series on Wednesday July 21 at 10 a.m. in the Fairchild Theatre on the MSC campus.
State Police reported 152 traffic deaths in May, up 18 from last year and the highest May total since 1941. Injuries totaled 4,777, a 10 percent drop from last May, while first five months showed 622 deaths and 20,534 injuries in 74,426 accidents.

Freeland Weber and J Brass from the Benton Harbor fish hatchery observed a water snake attack a sea lamprey along Blue Creek. The snake strangled and dragged the lamprey ashore and consumed it within about ten minutes, illustrating a predator-prey interaction amid lamprey invasion in the Great Lakes.
Company M of the 333d Infantry Regiment displays the Fr R McCracken Sr trophy awarded for military excellence and training attendance. Master Sgt. Robert Peterson notes the unit’s smart field performance at Camp McCoy. Regimental Commander Lt. Col. Harold C. Dumanois presented the trophy at Clare where it is showcased before moving to other towns.
Donald A. Shoemaker 44 from Knox Indiana died when the TV antenna he was connecting at a trailer camp contacted a 11 000 volt Consumers Power line. His wife suffered burns as the antenna fell on her. Rain made the ground damp aiding a ground stroke. Shoemaker recently moved from Hastings Michigan to Clare where he planned to begin work for Clifton Engineering Company. The body was taken to Knox for burial.

Officials warn that downtown drainage misroutes rainwater into the sewer system, risking overload. The current plant handles 25,000 gallons per hour, but heavy rain could push flows to 39,000–45,000 gallons hourly, necessitating city taxpayer funding for drainage corrections.
