The Citizens Advisory Committee of Clare School District 8 holds its first meeting in Clare High School to study building and curriculum needs for the enlarged district. Frank LaGoe elected permanent chair. plans include consulting an architectural firm and coordinating with districts considering annexation.
Dr Donald Dunlop M D begins general medicine practice in Clare at 301 East Fourth Street in a new redwood and stone building. A native of Clare he returns after Michigan Medical School and a year at St Josephs Ann Arbor. He plans affiliation with Central Michigan Community Hospital Mt Pleasant. The office features multiple rooms and modern decor.
The FCC and FCDA announce a 16 minute coast to coast halt in all regular radio and TV programs on July 20 to test emergency broadcasting. Stations will use 640 and 1240 kilocycles to relay Civil Defense information during the simulated mass nuclear attack targeting 76 cities and ports.
A break in at the Gulf Station in Farwell netted $1 from the cash register and four steel boxes with car titles and real estate deeds were later found missing. State Police and Farwell Police Chief Don Lloyd investigated for operator Ray Agile and owner L. Brasington. The boxes and most papers were recovered by Clare county workers Herman Leis and Lyman Wyman after being abandoned roadside about 3 1/4 miles east of Clare.
Rolland Krell and his two sons faced a July 1 cyclone that toppled the barn north east of Clare as the elder son stayed behind to finish chores. The younger boy escaped via a window as the stock remained unhurt. Elsewhere in Clare county, Dover church extension and auditorium ceiling suffered wind damage along with damaged dairies orchards and TV antennas.
Eighteen Clare Army reservists of the Michigan Indiana 70th Infantry Division joined two weeks of summer training at Cahir McCoy. Company I under 1st Lt Orrin H B Sharp completed a 48 hour field problem with a 14 mile march and a full scale divisional assault on June 29.
About 150 pupils teachers and friends gathered at Wallace schoolhouse in Arthur township on Sunday June 24 to renew memories and share new ones. Attendee Mrs. Ernest Wallace of Wolverine attended with relatives. many early teachers and former pupils joined the event. The Wallace district is being split with parts joining Gladwin and Hayes Agricultural schools.
Rural Clare voters choose Russell Eberhart for a three year term and Lionel Duncan for a one year term on the Clare school board. Duncan fills the unexpired seat of Earl Ruby after his resignation. Ruby left to create rural representation on the reorganized district.
The Clare Episcopal congregation of the Chapel of St Ann has started construction on a two acre Dunlop estates site east of old US-10. The two level wing 32 by 26 feet will be first. the church proper follows later. Murphy Construction handles masonry and beams. volunteers join in. Building committee includes Allan Holmes chairman and Robert Soldatt, William Goodwin, Addison Van Gampen. The mission committee lists Robert Soldatt warden Richard Wheeler treasurer and Lois Goodwin secretary. Rev Fr Robert Childs presides. Sunday services at 9 a m continue in the office beside the Ideal theatre with origins in Bates Cafe dining room since Oct 8 1953. The committee hopes MA building is ready for use by early.
Houghton's drug store completes installation of a 714 ton air conditioning system by the U S Air Company. The roof mounted unit uses a water tower and reuses water, de humidifies air, and removes about 5 percent of all pollen.
Clare County Prosecutor Robert Campbell denounces the State Auditor General's special audit of Justice Sherman as false and unfair. He calls Sherman's conduct honest and plans to finish his review and summarize findings after an on the spot reevaluation of the audit.
Michigan Consolidated Gas said it will begin serving 60 721 new space heating customers after FPC authorization to lift limits on heater connections. The PSC had allowed 40 000 waiting list connections and 20 000 new buildings plus 721 more customers in New Boston Milan and Saline. The 130 million dollar American Louisiana Pipe Line will boost gas supply by 70 percent and finish this summer. The utility plans to seek interruptible gas sales to industrial customers once confident in pipeline operation.
Ten Scouts from Troop 125 and two visitors camped under the stars on June 30 at the Five Lake fishing site. They gathered at the Congregational Church and hiked to the site, with leaders including Scoutmaster Dee Wade and Assistant Scoutmaster Ray Hanchett guiding the group.
A car driven by Thomas Cook on US-27 experienced a brake lock, crashing into a utility pole near Dr. Kuno Hammerberg's office. Estimated car damage was 300 dollars. Earlier, Earl Beatty, 18, collided with a gas station vehicle and was cited for yielding right of way. George Sexton, driving a rural Clare truck, failed to stop and hit Phyllis Storrs. Storrs was taken to Clare Hospital with neck injuries. Sexton paid 12 dollars in fines in Clare Municipal Court.
Well-Baby conferences are scheduled for July 18 and July 20. At Farwell clinics will run July 18 in the Methodist church from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. at the Clare Congregational church. At Harrison the clinic will be July 20 in the Court House basement from 9 to 11 a.m.
Reverend Harold Smith longtime Clare Church of the Nazarene pastor since 1953 is moved to Potterville. He will preach farewell this Sunday as his family prepares to relocate this weekend. The Smiths began local pastorate in 1958 and helped expand the church building amid membership growth.
