Rain Floods Cause Wide Damage Here
A sudden storm Sunday night and Monday brought violent winds and record rainfall in Clare and surrounding areas. Four percent inches drenched the region, swelling creeks to flood stage and forcing several families from their homes. Homes, basements, and roofs suffered damage while farm fields and roads were washed out. Public utilities crews repaired transformers knocked out by lightning as floodwaters continued to threaten bridges and sewage plants.

Veteran Phone Man Hellinger Reaches 85 Years Service
Clyde R. Pat Hellinger of Lake Station marked his 85th year with Michigan Bell after starting as a lineman in 1922. The veteran, who moved from Battle Creek to Clare three years ago, helped rebuild after the Great Sleet Storm of 1922 and witnessed the dial conversion and shift to one man crews. He has long served the Red Cross and sat on the Battle Creek township board for 12 years.

Harold Glass of 526 West Genessee Lansing was found guilty July 2 in Clare Municipal Court of driving under the influence of alcohol from an April offense. Justice William B. More Work On Church At Colonville
Colonville correspondent Mrs. Beulah Bodkins reports ongoing repair work at the Colonville church. Tuesday evening the men used tractors and graders to remove dirt near the building to stop water leaking into the basement. Parts of the crew worked on the heating system while others laid cement and blocks and cleaned up. The group hopes to landscape the grounds soon.
