Agricultural tips mix livestock care and farming economics
Advice covers poultry lice control and bull weight measurement alongside farm equipment checks and fertilizer economics. It prescribes lindane sprays and nicotine applications for birds, weight averaging for bulls, and entropy about fuel, belts, tires, and ventilation. It notes fertilizer costs and returns for oats in 1954.
Fertilizer and Lime Must Be Tested Together
Ed Longnecker of Michigan State College urges farmers to test soil for lime before using fertilizer. He recommends a soil pH of 6.5 to 7.0 for regular crops and notes 7.0 is neutral. Samples should go to the county soil testing lab to qualify for the 1954 cost share program, with tests costing 50 cents per sample.
