No mechanical changes, but front end, fenders, and radiator updated. rustless steel headlamps and hub cans, 4.75x19 tires, and broader cab space across five open and closed body styles.
Spirits filled the state oil rights sale in Clare county Monday as the Conservation Department offered 2.04 acres across Mason Muskega Midland and Clare counties. James A. McKay of Detroit secured 709 acres in Midland and Clare counties while bidding up to 325 dollars for 32 acres in Clare. The White Star Hearing Company of Detroit bid on 150 acres in Clare county. The auction awaits commission and Administrative Board approval.
A meeting to organize the Boy Scouts troop in Troy will be held at the studio on Monday at 7:30 PM. The meeting will discuss taking in new members and planning the unit’s activities led by BH. B. Sternaman.
The Clare Good Literature Club will meet at the home of Mrs. W W Hurd due to the illness of Mr. Callihan. The meeting date Monday night was moved from Mr Callihan.
Beaverton men visit Clare for a high school basketball clash tonight at the local gymnasium. Coach Alldread’s team, coming off vaccination effects, eyes a strong showing after Ewart’s visit next Friday promises a first and second team showdown with Osceola County’s Eddie Hubel guiding a sturdy lineup.
The Clare post office reports record parcel post shipments and overall Christmas mail volume. Twenty clerks worked through the season as customers received courteous service amid peak shipping days.
A pleasant Christmas gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William G. Lansing drew twenty nine guests including I. N. Lansing Frank Lamphere Russell Wilson J. D. Lansing Henry Silverson Davison Friz Pike Seibt Fred Lamphere and others from Flint Mern dale Clare Grand Rapids and Lansing. The group arrived by eleven and shared a big meals with boxers and mortician guests arriving later. Each attendee departed in high spirits after a grand Christmas day.
List of donors to the Welfare fund over recent weeks includes Dan Crouse and Robert J. B. Wilson each giving one dollar, C. Kirkbride one dollar, Mr. and Mrs. George Burch two dollars, an unnamed friend one dollar, and Anonymous contributing one dollar.
A widely promoted event hosted by the M E church Ladies Auxiliary features a male cast in a Womanless Wedding directed by Will Simpson Levie of Bardstown Kentucky. The production, described as wholesome humor, promises bright costumes and strong audience appeal with prior shows drawing packed houses.
Twenty two Clare Vacation Club members gathered at Barnes Cafe for an informal annual meeting. Rev H B Johnson chaired discussions on a summer picnic at James S Bicknell cottage and next year’s December 26 dinner. Members include Clare high school graduates now in colleges or city jobs with varied occupations.
In loving memory of D. W. Comer who died December 1 1928 after long illness. The family sorrowfully recalls his suffering and prayers and asks God to grant eternal rest while recalling his life and love. Mrs. D. W. Comer and family express heartfelt grief and remembrance.
A meeting of Clare Isabella Pomona Grange will be held at Mt. Vernon Grange Hall next Thursday evening January 9. A chicken supper will be served.
Miss Marjorie Jackson, long time Clare post office clerk, has been transferred to a Detroit post office. She started in April 1919, after graduating from Clare high school in 1919, and will soon learn her new Detroit assignment. She will reside in Detroit with her sister Mrs Dale Peterson, whose husband works as a post office inspector.
Robert Brownell died from burns after a foundry explosion at Liberman and Gittlen in Grand Rapids. Funeral services were held at the Congregational church with Rev. H. B. Johnson officiating. He was born June 25 1895 in Gratiot county and leaves parents three sisters and two brothers among other relatives.
Miss Mor ence Pierce married Terrance O Laughlin on Tuesday December 24 in Jackson. The couple, lifelong childhood friends from Big Rapids, will reside in Jackson. Mrs. O Laughlin, sister of Mrs. J H Wilson, has served as musical supervisor of River Rouge schools and taught music and art in Michigan. Mr. O Laughlin works as an expert mechanic for the Steel Products Company in Jackson.
The community thanks the Woman's Club of Farwell for rocking chairs ice cream and cake for infirmary inmates at Christmas. Gratitude is extended to Eastern Stars Mrs Murphy's Outdoor Club of Harrison and Rev Chas Kleinhardt Mrs H Dysinger Chas Garver Wm Kanart Ira Miller Geo Bates Mrs H Mickle and Mrs Clair Coulter for their kindness. The Advance Grange plans a box social and Blue Day party at their hall on Friday evening in January. Ladies are invited to wear something like pocketbooks, and everyone is welcome. For sale items by Fred layed and H. Vonburg listed.
Sheriff M Callihan prominent real estate broker and justice of the peace of this city was seriously injured when his car collided with a truck driven by L L Drew of Marion about three miles east of the city on U S 10. Gerald Callihan the driver and a student at Michigan State College was returning home for holiday. Harold Jones suffered cuts to his head and hands. Drew from Detroit transported office supplies for Dr H C Danforth moving to Marion. The damaged load was transferred to another truck after the crash.
The annual Farmers Week at Michigan State College runs February 3 to 7 with a major information clearinghouse on up to date farm ideas led by Michigan farmers. The program trims general talks in favor of special subject meetings and informal sessions to boost practical discussion for delegates from more than 30 state agricultural societies. Entertainment and talks by national farm and business figures mix with enhanced exhibits as over 5,000 delegates from across the state have registered.
The Clare County Savings Bank stockholders meet Tuesday January 14 1930 at 10 00 a m in the banking office to elect directors and handle other business. GC H Sutherland cashier dated December 30 1925.
Dan Holcomb of Lansing speared through Beebe lake ice during a holiday visit near Clare. He landed several small fish and a thirty nine inch pike weighing seventeen pounds, drawn from the hole beneath the ice.
Mrs. Bessie Hartman, longtime clerk with Michigan Bell in Clare, is transferred to the Midland exchange to begin cashier duties next Monday. Mrs. Alfred Holbrook, now chief operator, will add cashiering duties at the Clare exchange while remaining on the switchboard only in emergencies. The office suite will gain a rest room, the rest room becomes an office, and the operating room will be enlarged for an additional switchboard position. the entire suite will be redecorated. Seven Clare operators now employed, with a seventh hoped for under the board change.
Mrs. Wm. A. Feighner of Sparta died suddenly Tuesday night. Her death recalls her as an early Clare resident and mother of Ivan E. Feighner, sister of D. E. Mater. Funeral in Sparta Friday at 10:00 with burial in Cherry Grove. life sketch to run next week.
Mt. Pleasant Independents beat Clare Merchants 21 17 at the high school gym. Mt. Pleasant led 10 0 after the first quarter and 15 9 at halftime, with Clare rallying to 19 17 late in the final period before the visitors sealed the win. The Merchants chase a rematch with Bogart Independents.
We thank friends and neighbors for kindness and sympathy after the death of our son and brother. Gratitude for flowers, furnished cars, Rev Johnsons comforting words, and the singers.
On opening day Saturday hundreds of citizens from the city and nearby counties visited the new Citizens State Bank building. The bank hosted a reception with doorman Amos Bronson in a blue and gold uniform and flowers from Detroit Grand Rapids Saginaw Clare County Savings Bank and local businesses. James S. Bicknell and Mrs Bicknell led staff with Frank Duvall of Bond Hubbard Chicago guiding visitors and presenting souvenirs.
Friends and former parishioners learned of the death of Rev C W Waidelich of Kawkawiin on Christmas Day after a lingering illness from heart trouble. He served as pastor of St Johns Lutheran church in this city for ten years before moving his family to St Louis in 1918. A brick church was erected during his ministry. He is survived by his widow and eight children. Mr and Mrs J W Schaeffer and Mr and Mrs Chas Krell and Wm Krell attended the funeral Monday. burial was in Saginaw cemetery.
About twenty five taxpayers in Vernon township met at the town hall to protest the McDonald drain project which they say will cost ten to twelve thousand dollars. Petitions were drafted for circulation among taxpayers soon.
The Love Doctor plays at Princess Theatre with Richard Dix for New Year laughter and romance. Hollywood Revue showcases color singing and dancing with 200 performers. Long Long Trail features Hoot Gibson and Tarzan the Mighty serial. Joan Crawford in Our Modern Maidens and Clara Bow in The Saturday Night Kid headline upcoming dates.
Epworth League will discuss Social Service led by Miss Mildred Stirling. All members urged to attend at 6 50. Miss Louise Mulder, student at Action College, spent the holiday with her parents.
