Son Held After Fatal Shot Kills Clare Father
A sixteen year old Clare schoolboy admitted firing the fatal shotgun blast that killed Frank Helmie, five and one half miles north of Clare. The shooting occurred in the Helmie home when the husband allegedly forced the wife on a drinking spree. The boy sits in custody as hearings determine probate or circuit court jurisdiction. Funeral aid funds and sympathetic messages spread as the family seeks support.

Pastor HB C Leyrer, serving St. John’s Congregations in Clare and Hamilton township since August 4 1940, has accepted a call to Trinity Lutheran Congregation in Elkton Michigan. He will be installed March 7 after farewell services in Clare and Hamilton. Farewell gatherings were held February 17 in Clare and February 2 in Hamilton. A supply pastor will lead services until a new pastor arrives.

Draft Takes Two This Week
Two young men will leave for induction next Tuesday February 23 according to Bernie Wilson clerk of the local draft board. The selectees are William Randle and Carl Pelcher both of Clare. They were honored at a Kiwanis dinner. Ten men will be called for physicals in February and two were on the county quota for induction in March.

Public Opinion Poll Tests Knowledge Of Local Schools
A Clare Michigan poll begins February 22 to gauge public knowledge of U S Government History and Citizenship taught in schools. Sponsored by The Michigan Press Association and Michigan Educators the survey is run by Michigan State College staff and funded by The Kellogg Foundation Midwest committee. Dairymen in Clare and Isabella counties anticipate the Sixth Annual Dairy Tour on Monday February 22 featuring early morning farm visits to Perry Geeck Farm Loomis area and Frank Thoring Farm Clare with bulk milk handling and new dairy barns.
