Clare voters head to the polls Saturday February 26 to decide two millage measures for 1977 78 and 78. Renewal of 18 mills for school operations is on the ballot with a 3 mill increase requested to maintain programs amid rising heating and lighting costs.
Joseph Manley of Farwell used a bowling ball to defend himself when two men demanded money outside the Clare Bowling Alley around 93 p.m. Feb. 8. One assailant was struck and knocked down, the other fled. Police later linked the incident to a car theft in Farwell as possibly related.
The Farwell Area Schools Board of Education met February 14 in the High School Cafeteria. They approved bills totaling 75,105.67, authorized boiler replacement costs under 2500, and asked Wakely Associates to review roof leaks. They considered a union election for 50 percent of transportation and staff employees and hired Jack Winters as district attorney. A second special meeting February 21 at 7 30 p.m. will set millage for the March 28 election. Budget projections for 1977 78 are available at the administration office.
Clare police seek two women who stole items from several stores including 2 CB radios from Clare Hardware a sweater and blue jeans from Gittlemen's and a blouse and swimsuit from Mill End. Chief Elly Tice pursued them near the Post Office and city hall but they fled and radios were not recovered.
Joe Buckles won $10,000 on a Michigan Lottery Bingo ticket purchased at Hotel Doherty after paying his coffee bill last week. The ticket revealed a $16,000 Bingo word when rubbed.
