American Forestry Association and Its Purpose

Dear Editor, readers in northern Michigan may wish to learn about the American Forestry Association and its work. In Chicago on January 22 the 60th anniversary was marked at the Hamilton Club with remarks by George D. Pratt. He recalled early founders who saw forest destruction and formed a group to preserve forests and advocate wise laws. The association influenced Congress to enact conservation measures, place lands under U.S. government protection, and acquire lands for reforestation. Its magazine American Forestry and Wildlife has educated on trees, wildlife, and forests, and subscribing makes one a member. Dean Coffey of the University of Minnesota spoke on Lake States forest problems, fire protection, and cutover lands, urging laws from state legislatures. (Continued on page Seven).
