The nine substantive committees met deadlines but faced tense sessions as they debated apportionment and local control. Local Government settled a county home rule plan to be controlled by a board of supervisors, with five county officials still elected, sparking expected floor debate.
A new county 4-H Live stock Judging Club was formed largely through the efforts of Mrs. Earl House and Mrs. Ewart Bowerman in Mt. Pleasant. The group aims to study beef cattle sheep and swine with focus on consumer meat needs and carcass evaluation from wholesale to retail. The initial meeting at the Earl House farm featured a spaghetti dinner and officer elections with Richard Harless as president and Gary Lowery as social chairman. The club plans alternate Saturday meetings and will meet February 10 at the Ewart Bowerman farm three and a half miles west of old US-27 on Weidman Road for lamb carcass study. Contact Mrs. House or Mrs. Bowerman or the county 4-H agent at Spring 5-4131.
Four Clare county Farm Bureau members attended the district Con-Con seminar at Lansing on Tuesday January 30. Dan Reed of the Michigan Farm Bureau Legislative staff summarized proposals and possible effects. Lunch followed with delegates from central Michigan and Clare county members meeting Lewis Hubbs of Gladwin.
Tony Wedal and friend Jerry Forsberg wowed Columbus area viewers as they pitched eight days and nights solo camping in Michigan. Don Mac on WBRM-TV hosted a 20 minute segment with an interview and Tony gifted a pair of fresh caught ghiegirls.
Clare City Bowling Championships enter its second weekend as J R Building wins the lead with 3105 and Luce Real Estate slides to second. New doubles leaders K Haskell and B Hileman post 1313 while Knoetzer dominates singles with 673 and A Smith holds All Events at 1818.
Clare county Republicans announce their Lincoln Day dinner to be held February 17 at 7:00 p m in the Harrison Masonic Temple. Main speaker will be Constitutional Convention Vice President Edward Hutchinson, a former state senator from Fennville and a noted constitutional law expert. Tickets are $2.50 and advance reservations are in high demand through the Clare County Republican Committee.
The Clare County Ministerial Association will meet Tuesday February 13 at 10 am in the United Brethren Church Harrison. Rev Robert McCleary of Harrison will present a paper on the Congregational Church as part of a denominational series. A pot luck luncheon follows and clergymen of all faiths are welcome.
Clare residents Mrs Myra Asline and Miss Mary McKinna report mail theft affecting letters and cards sent home from Florida. A Tampa postal inspector noted mistreatment of mail and delivered recovered mail matter that was later found empty. the bundles postmarked December 18 and 19 were among those seized in a theft.
The Clare FFA Pest Contest ran December 26 to January 26 with two teams Clare and Isabella counties. Clare won 32 750 points to Isabella 4 900 as top scorers included Frank Hutchinson Pat Murphy Jack Kleinhardt and Harold Sunday for Clare and Jim Ginger Greg Brooks Glen Cole and Sam Kushman for Isabella. The losing side plans a celebratory party for the winners.
Heavy snow and gusty winds created treacherous driving conditions through Tuesday night. Clare County road supervisor Tom Cook reported minor plow interruptions and about 1000 in repairs from equipment damage. Graders and plows slipped and ditched on wind drifts, one machine blocked a road and ruined its transmission. A rural mail carrier witnessed a grader with a tilted blade stuck mid route. Sanding has improved surface conditions and Phillips Hill near Lake is now passable. over 50 tons of salt has been used with another order pending due to salt depletion.
During National Beauty Salon Week two Clare beauty shop owners and five students from Mt. Pleasant High School of Cosmetology provided free service at Ardis Convalescent Home near Farwell. Twenty permanents and haircuts were given plus three bed patients received haircuts and wages. Donors included Banner Linen Co and Ray Kerns of Saginaw.
Since the winter solstice on December 21, 1961, daylight length has been increasing. By the end of January there will be about an hour more daylight than in December.
Clare High School released the first semester honor roll of 83 students with a B average or higher after half year exams on January 24 and 25. Freshmen led with 34 names including Eric Hammerberg, Carol Walter, Melvin Hampton, and Mary Rodabaugh. four students earned straight A 4.00 GPAs.
Michigan high school physics teachers from nine counties will gather at Central Michigan University on February 15 for a conference titled Science Education for Physics. Dr Malcolm Hi Filson of CMU will advise. About 70 teachers from Arenac Bay Clare Gladwin Iosco Isabella Midland Ogeman Roscommon expected. Demonstrations include Similarities of Wave Behavior and The Sun to Sound.
The State Highway Department report shows October to December 1961 Highway Fund receipts at 47,517,496 up 4,279,097 from 1960. Gross 49,304,003 with costs 1,590,985 and Waterways share 195,522. Allocation splits: 47 percent to state highways, 35 percent to counties, 18 percent to cities and villages. County and city allocations listed include Clare 83,569 and Harrison 3,089 among others.
Notebook reviews almanac forecasts and Groundhog Day lore. It notes a sunny February 2, a possible longer winter if a shadow appeared, and compares long range predictions to actual conditions. Clare County collected 7112.40 as its 1961 payment in lieu of taxes on 47416 acres of state lands. The sum, part of 602329.56 statewide for tax reverted lands, will be distributed to local school districts and townships by acreage. California?
