Terracing for Erosion Control On Vast Farm Operations
University of Illinois agricultural engineer E L Hansen says terraces on thousands of farms can be maintained without special equipment or time loss by aligning farming operations and cropping systems to the terrace. Building up the ridge is easier than tearing it down and plowing parallel to the terrace is most effective. Using a single disk and back furrowing helps when the ridge isn't straddled. Cultivating parallel to terraces prevents topsoil loosening and over topping during heavy rain. Ridge height can drop a few inches after one corn crop, and blade graders can restore efficiency if needed.
