Potatoes Thrive On Coal Ash Soils In Michigan Claim
Former Cheboygan mayor John C. Rittenhouse shows potatoes growing well on coal ash amended soil. He spread about 20 tons of coal ash per acre behind his house and planted three quarters of an acre with late Petoskey potatoes, expecting around 800 bushels per acre. He credits coal ash for about half the yield, noting $200 return if potatoes sell for 50 cents a bushel, while soil experts say ash helps soften hard soils but is not a full fertilizer.
