The Farwell Labor Day events begin Saturday August 30 with Kid's Day at the midway and run through Monday night fireworks. Sponsored by the Farwell Rotary Club the homecoming celebration dates to the turn of the century and includes bicycle drawings for kids with two more bikes awarded Monday evening.
Coleman School district and the Coleman Education Association failed to reach terms last week despite a state appointed mediator. A fact finding session was requested but no date set. Classes begin Tuesday September 2 with half day, then full days Wednesday. Lunch program starts Wednesday. The district serves 1,455 students with 65 teacher posts filled once the master contract is signed. Community events include the Auld Lang Syne Society dinner on Saturday in Farwell School, a chicken barbecue at Farwell Recreation Park, and a parade Monday at 9 a.m.
Reports spoke of war but Monday's edge stayed calm as the Board of Education and the Clare Education Association approved the measure, marking a pivotal step in local schooling policy.
The board and representatives of the Education Association agree on a new master teacher contract after separate meetings. The consensus outlines terms for salary, duties, and working conditions to be finalized by next session.
The Citizens Committee on Facilities urged Clare Board of Education to seek a 30 year bond of about 6 1/2 mills for a two million project. They propose a K 4 4 4 system with new elementary housing K-4, middle grades 5–8, and high school separately. They cite three main projects totaling about 4 million but favor phased bonding due to tax concerns.
A head on collision on U S 10 near Maple Grove Road leaves James Schultz 42 and Delores Schultz 40 dead. Their seven children lose both parents as Albert Carlson 34 and Rick Seavey 38 face drunken driving charges. A third driver, Eugene Pety 21, escapes injury. Fund drives open in Clare for the Schultz children. Funeral services set for August 27 at Coker Funeral Home.
The Board of Education ratified the master contract unanimously at the August 25 meeting. Representing the teachers, Michael Tate noted the agreement was approved with little difficulty. The two year term marks a rarity, with Richard Snyder calling it a chance to focus on building needs. The contract also streamlines grievances and includes binding arbitration if no settlement is reached, plus higher starting salaries ranging from 7100 for B A degree holders to 7600 in 1970 71.
The Clare Sentinel announces revised deadlines for the September 3 issue due to the Labor Day holiday. Classified and display ads plus local news must be submitted by 4 p.m. Friday to meet the regular Tuesday publication deadline while allow staff to observe the holiday.
Harrison schools adopt a two session plan after a failed millage vote and rising enrollment. Grades 9 12 attend 7 a.m. to noon, grades 6 8 from noon to 5 p.m. with K 5 on the previous schedule. The district plans 20 bus routes and slightly reduced lunch service as it opens September 2.
