Clare School Board approves millage cut and summer program rethink

The Clare Board of Education met for two hours and approved several actions including a millage reduction from 2.5 to 2.0 mills on the 1959 high school debt service scheduled to end in 1987 and a tentative cancellation of the Summer Reading program. Principal Al Schumm cited tighter Title I funds from 23 000 to 19 000 and recommended extending a teacher aide program instead. The board also clarified high school absence policy replacing unexcused absences with absent not school excused and instructed letters to parents.

Voice Of The People Sees Local Growth In Clare County

The Clare County Voice of the People executive board met on August 7 to plan a booth for Labor Day and reported strong results from the Clare County Fair. Membership surpassed 650 with 148 signups and surveys showing 95 percent dissatisfaction with current tax and spending practices. They gathered about 300 signatures urging Governor Milliken to reverse a 50 million dollar capitol bill. A state meeting is set for August 23, with a September 5 delegates meeting planned and efforts to form committees and expand to Isabella County.

Isabella County Fair Kicks Off With Demolition Derby and Queen Pageant

The Isabella County Fair opens next Tuesday at Mt Pleasant Island Park running through Saturday. Fair board president Orville J Klumpp says two major outside attractions will headline: a Demolition Derby at 8 p.m. Wednesday and country star Faron Young performs Friday night. Queen pageant starts Tuesday with changes promised by chairwoman Mrs. Lawrence Nielson. Other events include horse show, 4 H livestock sale, tractor pulling contests, and Crown Amusement Midway with 18 rides.
