Rebuilding worn soils with rye and buckwheat green manures
County agricultural agent Orville Walker of Kalkaska County details a soil-building system using rye and buckwheat as green manures. He drills rye in late August, applies 3-12-12 fertilizer, top-dresses with nitrogen in April, and disc downs before heading. Buckwheat is sown in June with high-nitrogen fertilizer, then tilled down in full bloom.

Ensure sun exposure and wind protection, proper slope, and drainage toward a grassed waterway. Plan 100 square feet per cow paved area, prepare the lot, and lay four inches of goat quality concrete with possible welded wire mesh for heavy traffic. Preliminary inventory from Michigan State College and the Department of Conservation warns some species will be hard to obtain. Red pine and jack pine seedlings are readily available, while Scotch and white pine, spruce and fir may be scarce. Order blanks become available August 15 through county extension offices or by writing the Forestry Division in Lansing or MSU. County agents carry the blanks from Higgin's Lake nursery, and early orders are advised to ensure supply.
