Ace Attractions brings Barnes-Caruthers stage shows and Jose Chitwood Auto Thrill Drivers to open the Clare county fair August 14 as 4 H exhibitors, livestock and farm contest entries, and a three night fireworks display frame three days of racing and premium prizes.
A goodly number of Clare voters tested the new automatic voting machines Friday morning with City Clerk Dave Adams promising a demonstration Friday evening from 7 to 9. City officials hope turnout for the demo and weeklong trials will ease voters into the machines before the August 7 primary. The rental devices tally votes in real time and simplify reporting, with inspection board members named for the August 7 primary.
Mrs. Joanne Wilcox Clare dancing teacher spent a week in Chicago for a refresher course by the Chicago National Association of Dance Masters at the Hotel Sherman. She returned Sunday and is a member of the organization.

Pratt school district failed to approve annexation with 27 yes 19 no on first question, 26 20 on age limit, and 18 yes 19 no on assuming bonded debt. Voters debate tax rates and rural schooling as Brown district also rejected annexation. A six month wait is required to try again, with bond approval shaping next steps.
State Representative Hugh D Johnston, retiring this year, writes to Sentinel leaders urging a younger man be elected to carry on duties in Isabella Clare District. He thanks friends and neighbors for support and says he avoided remaining in office to avoid poor representation. He offers advice to a prospective successor on request.

Henry Schroeder 30 of Clare R-1 told Michigan State Police he was beaten and robbed of 45 by an unknown driver near Farwell. He was treated at Clare General Hospital for facial cuts and released the same day. A suspect was questioned and released as investigators pursue leads.

George Hoak of Houghton Lake Heights had a hearing delayed after a July 30 date could not be cleared with the Clare County prosecutor. Justice James Yoder of Harrison will preside as a new date is set. Hoak was ticketed July 16 for driving slowly with a loaded trailer on US-27 near Spikehorn's, hindering following traffic.
A special Clare County Board of Education meeting is set for August 6 at 8 p.m. in Harrison to discuss transferring Grant No. 4 to Farwell Rural Area School No. 7 NE of NE and 514 acres of NW of NE of Section 16 Grant Township and half of NW of Section 16 to William Kapplinger and Dale and Tessie Reynolds. Board president Robert Carter calls the meeting.

She will receive a Posturepedic mattress from Clare Furniture Clare and may be entered for a grand prize of 20000 in cash or common stocks or a Jamaica vacation via Delta Air Lines.
Diane Allen opens his own television and radio service and repair business after years with a Clare firm. Located four blocks north of Doherty hotel, one block east, the shop offers parts and repair gear. The ad proclaims electronic work as the main business with training from Detroit commercial engineering school.
The Clare County United Fund Board met at Hotel Doherty last Wednesday and adopted a constitution to govern the group. Attorney Robert Campbell was tasked to proceed with incorporation. A new board will be elected August 9 with three directors from Clare, Farwell, and Harrison, and three from the county at large. The drive targets a full budget after last year reached 86 percent of its goal. An August 14 advisory meeting will report progress and subcommittee results ahead of a two week full-group session.
Charlie Cooper of Clare was elected Department Commander of the Veterans of World War I at a state convention in Grand Rapids on July 27 2829 on the first ballot. He defeated Earl Picard and Herman Mueth. Frank Lochrie was named senior vice commander and other officers were elected.
Gary Agle of Farwell was attempting a left turn at the Reynolds home near the US 10 and M115 junction when a following car struck his pickup, flipping it. He suffered a badly sprained neck and was treated at Clare Hospital. He was later discharged with advice to rest and avoid activity.
A Clare driver surrendered his license after a July DUI charge. Terry Davis faced a $54.30 fine and costs or 30 days in Harrison County jail. Police issued 57 traffic tickets in July for offenses including speeding and crossing yellow lines.
