Jesse R. Hampton longtime Clare resident and business leader dies in St Josephs Hospital Ann Arbor after a year of declining health born October 28 1892 in Sheridan township Clare county Michigan He was mayor of Clare 1934 to 1937 active in Masonic orders Knights of Pythias and Eastern Star he leaves two daughters Betty Jean and Lona Lee and was married to Gladys Nivison.

Old Haring School Photo Reveals 1880s Local Youth

Emma Youmans recalls the era when Haring school stood south of Clare near Vernon Cemetery before the 1891 brick building. Daughters and neighbors identify children in the 1888 photograph, noting many become today’s community leaders. Orlando Thayer once bought the old building for a chicken coop.

Ed Powell of R 1 Mt Pleasant was arrested for reckless driving and speeding after a chase on west Fifth Street and brushing fenders. Fay A Vening of Lansing drove into Raymond W Hitner’s path on McEwan Street. no injuries. John Kurtz of Clare pled guilty to failure to yield right of way and was fined 5 dollars and 3 dollars costs. Chas Hoppe of Marion and B G Mac(e)Martin of Midland involved in a minor accident. Lavern H Bullard of Flint cited for 50 in a 25 and fined 7 dollars plus 3 costs. Donna Marie Hills, 17, Marion, ran a red light and speeding, led to a long chase. fined 15 dollars plus 3 costs. (Continued on Page Twelve)

Dalton Dies After Long Illness At Traverse City

Frank David Dalton, born June 4, 1879, died July 21, 1947, at Traverse City Hospital after a long illness. He married Bessie Stoy in 1907 and had four children, two of whom died in infancy. Survived by his wife, son Donald of Clare, daughter Hye lyn Bowen of Detroit, two granddaughters, and three brothers. Funeral at Vernon township farm home with burial in Cherry Grove cemetery, Clare.

William Irish Succumbs to Fatal Heart Attack in Ithaca

W.N. Irish aged 51 district manager of the Michigan Unemployment Compensation Commission and former Ithaca merchant died at his Ithaca home Sunday morning after years of heart trouble. He previously ran the Family Shoe Store in Ithaca with his father in law before selling it to the Munson brothers. Born December 1 1895 in Shelby Ontario he served in the US Army in World War I and later led local business ventures before his unemployment post.

The Turner Drilling Corp of Mt. Pleasant completed an oil well for Pure Oil Co in Crawford county. Drilling reached 4410 feet in 34 days, an all time state record. Joanne Richard a local dancing teacher from Clare Mt Pleasant and Harrison schools attended the seventeenth annual Dance Congress in New York City. The six day event July 18 through 23 at the Hotel Commodore drew instructors from the United States and Canada and featured leaders including Russell Markert of the Rockettes.

Former Clare Resident John Bauder Dies at 62 in Midland

John F. Bauder born March 1 1885 in Chatham Ontario died Sunday July 27 at Midland Hospital aged 62. Survived by widow Neda and eleven children eight sons and daughters plus thirty grandchildren. He moved to Clare as a child and later to Midland where funeral services were held at the Midland Methodist Church with burial in Midland cemetery.

Fire Destroys Demarest Home in Beech Street Blaze

The Demarest residence at 04 Beech Street was ruined by a Tuesday afternoon fire caused likely by an electric refrigerator motor. Mrs Louise Demarest and her children escaped to a neighbor’s home as flames and smoke filled the house. Firefighters faced heavy heat and roof fires, retreating briefly before regaining control with a new pumper and hose track. Insurance covers the loss of several thousand dollars in furnishings including a $250 kitchen sink and an electric stove.

Mrs Thomas Abbott died early Friday July 25 at Clare Hospital aged 74 years 3 months 1 day after eight weeks in hospital following a leg amputation on June 27 She was born Rebecca Dauber April 23 1873 in Eden Ohio and lived in Arthur township Clare County with her families and spouses Rebecca married Jacob Cook in October 1891 they had five children Mr Cookson died October 5 1911 She later married Thomas Abbott April 1 1922 and was a member of the Clare Baptist Church now listed as a continuation on page six.

Clare Fireman Hurt En Route To Grass Fire

Doherty a longtime Clare Fire Department member suffered a severe gash and multiple contusions after slipping from a moving fire truck en route to a grass fire near the Clare Livestock Auction Yards. Mrs. Delbert C. Wilson of Hast County Line died Saturday at 1:40 PM while being taken to Clare Hospital after a heart attack at her sister’s home in Pontiac. Born Ruth Eleanor Baker on April 9 1908 in Vernon Hill she married Wilson in Clare Jan 2 1927 and lived in Coleman before moving to Clare three years ago.
