Defense Needs Felt in Schools Defense Needs Felt in Schools
The national defense program has prompted a shift to night work in schools as the defense commission surveys skilled labor gaps. Aviation, shipbuilding, metalworking, and military branches seek thousands of trained engineers, inspectors, and meteorologists, underscoring a broad shortage beyond pilots and mechanics. A New York state example shows plants lacking enough skilled workers for single or double shifts, with hundreds to tens of thousands more needed. The studies are exploratory but already pushing schools to adapt training.
