Hawaiian Town Wiped Out by Lava From Mauna Loa
Hoopuloa village on Hawaii's southwest shore disappeared as lava from Mauna Loa buried ten to fifteen homes and the post office. Several hundred aboard the steamer Haleakala watched a fiery lava river reach the sea as two lava branches formed. Army planes scanned the area but clouds of steam hindered view. Mauna Loa, 14 678 feet high, has been active after years of inactivity.
