Navy Lieutenant James W. Ernst and Electronics Technician Third Class McCallister from Cedar Rapids joined Heavy Photographic Squadron 62 in the unmanned Apollo 4 operation. A Skywarrior jet photographed the Saturn V booster separation from the second stage near Bermuda as the craft circled Earth, reentering at high speeds to test heat shields and aerodynamic performance.
