Fire chief Hunter announced the council will soon review a proposed ordinance banning trash burning within city limits. He cited a three million dollar warehouse fire caused by a trash burner and noted total trash pickup makes the law practical. He urged caution on windy days and urged no burning near structures.
The Citizen Times editors announce they will not present a humorous sketch at the Cedar Rapids Press Club Grid Dinner on June 30. They cite withdrawal of invitation by local media and council, expressing dismay at the lack of support and declining to attend or submit the sketch. They leave the stage to others to fill the event with fare.
John C. Culver thanked supporters after a heavy primary win as he began the general election campaign against the Republican incumbent. He greeted workers at the Cedar Rapids site and praised those who aided his nomination. Culver noted 30,000 miles traveled and 300 public appearances supporting his progressive plan for November victory and a stronger district future.
Four youths aged 12 to 16 damaged Bever Park during the weekend by burning a picnic table and stacking another on the fire. Cedar Rapids parks superintendent Elmer Delaney said a cruising police car spotted the burning table and prevented serious damage. The vandals also moved six more tables and blocked park roads, a couple in the park reported witnessing the acts.
