Los Angeles witnessed the largest picket line in city history on Oct 17 as nearly 20000 demonstrators marched four abreast in front of Polytechnic High School to protest Ger ald L. K. Smith. The anti fascist protest targeted Smith's anti-Semitic rhetoric during his appearance at a pension rally.
George Bannister of Local 214, back at American Oak Leather Co after two years overseas, describes frontline fighting with the 26th Infantry. He witnessed a buddy beheadings, a boy with a machine gun, and hostile civilians as U S troops crossed into Germany. He was wounded near the Rhine, hospitalized in Aachen and Liege, then returned home to Nellie.
A CIO pamphlet released Sept 27 argues that failure to provide industry in the 1930s cost the U S about $400 billion, more than World War II, in guaranteed year round wages. The pamphlet is issued by the CIO Department of Research and Education.
