Ohio sees a rebirth of progressive government with Cleveland Mayor Frank J. Lausche elected governor. CIO-PAC backed Lausche, while Sen. Taft faced a tight race amid crossovers from Stewart voters. Pickrel and Stewart’s local support shaped a difficult statewide contest.
The Roosevelt victory this week and stronger Congress were hailed as proof of labor's political role. Voters repudiated anti labor smears and isolationist, defeatist elements. Sidney Hillman called it a stunning repudiation of bigotry and prejudice surrounding the labor movement.
