Local 647 UAW CIO members met at Emery Auditorium Sunday at two for the first group of By-Laws. George Meyer presided, Earl Harrison chaired the By-Laws committee with Harrison Edessa Rakestraw Gladys McArthur Louis Reid and A T Carrelli. The group read one article at a time, discussed, and voted. The key rule set the monthly general membership meeting for the second or third Sunday at two P M. Future By-Laws will be read after international Union approval. William Duerson reported finances Jim Todhunter presented the bargaining report William Kircher offered the educational update.
Local officials met with a State CIO official to finalize plans for a CIO wide anti discrimination conference set for June 10. George Meyer, Edessa Rakestraw, and Jerry Maxey participated to arrange speakers and discussions at the UAW Hall on Vine Street. Representatives from CIO affiliates across the region will be invited.
The meeting lists nominees for Stewards Council offices including Morning Meeting Chairman candidates Joe Vanoli Lee Gill G B Marsh A Trotta S Hughes and M Grinker Vice Chairman contenders Chester Sonderman G L Jeffrey and L Douglas Recording Secretary nominees Clara Cokigee W Rollins R Stickley and William Brueckner Treasurer candidates Hazel McCreary F Wright and Al Meyers SGT AT ARMS nominees Fred Grosse Edgar Pharr Parliamentarian nominees F Williams and J Pugh Deadline prevents night session nominees. names to appear next week.
International UAW CIO president R. J. Thomas will open the June 11 session at the Local 647 Labour School in Corryville. Irv Richter returns to teach the first class. Xavier University’s Fr. R. T. Peters leads Public Speaking and Parliamentary Law. Registration is free for members.
UAW-CIO Local 785 won bargaining rights at Universal Tool Company after a May 18 NLRB election. The union secured about 90 percent of votes. Regional Director Paul E. Miley confirmed. International Representative George Wilkins led the drive and will begin negotiations immediately.
