The Hamilton County Political Action Committee fields seven endorsed candidates on the Democratic ballot for nomination in the May 10 1946 primary. The group claims effectiveness amid daily press reports.
Art Fierman United Electric vice president alleged provoked disturbances by Allis-Chalmers supervisors at Norwood plant. Police report rocks thrown at cars and a picket struck as women and men were assaulted. Union files unfair labor practices charges against the company.
Francis G. Davis won the Second District congressional nomination with PAC backing while Marvin C. Harrison led in Hamilton County for the U S Senate race though statewide results lagged. Sen James Huffman secured the nomination with Stephen Young second and Harrison third. CIO praised Huffman and Harrison’s vigor but backed Huffman for the fall contest against Bricker.
The Soldiers Relief Commission battles protests from veterans groups over denying relief to striking or cross line veterans. VFW leaders charge arbitrary treatment and urge Common Pleas judges to review actions. The commission remains split three to two, with some arguing relief would finance strikes.
The Soldiers' Relief Commission spent $23,631.66 on salaries and $36,418 on relief to administer $36,481.55 in veteran relief in 1945. Administrative costs exceeded 35 percent versus 12 percent for the Welfare Department. The commission had a $275,000 relief allotment for 1945, returning all but $64,544.22.
Sidney Hillman urged the Atlantic City CIO convention that reactionary industrialists could wreck free enterprise, warning 25 to 30 million workers may become unemployed without full production and employment. He faulted Congress for inflicting inflationary risk and urged adherence to Roosevelt’s economic bill of rights to ensure jobs and mass purchasing power.
Readers learn none of the three Cincinnati dailies sent reporters to CIO-PAC offices last fall or spring. The piece accuses papers of bias and avoidance, noting CIO-PAC’s broader activity, including support for seven of ten state Legislature candidates and the conduct of write-in campaigns.
