Columbus rally urges support for Senate Bill 144 to exempt public housing from taxation. Without passage, Ohio risks losing federal funds for public housing. hearing set for March 7 before the Senate Taxation Committee with Senators Lawrence Kane and Stanley McKie on the panel.
Negotiations began this week at Andrews Steel Co. Newport with United Steelworkers to implement a War Labor Board award for 2000 workers. Wage adjustments may be retroactive to Christmas 1943 and include shifts, vacations, and new severance terms. Further talks planned with Lunkenheimer and Powell Valve and 18 other Cincinnati plants.
Washington reports wage and manpower tensions as the War Labor Board members urge no revision of the Little Steel Formula. CIO leader Philip Murray conscripts an extraordinary Executive Board meeting while John L. Lewis warns of a coal strike on April 1 if wage demands fail. The presidency and Congress face pressure over the stabilization act as disputes rise.
Arthur Hartmann CIO representative for Region 5 receives a certificate of merit. Hartmann is associate director of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers and president of the CIO Industrial Union Council, serving on the board since May 10, 1943. The award is signed by Paul McNutt, Robert C. Goodwin, and E. L. Keenan.
Red Cross investigates a man who reportedly donated blood eight times over eight weeks and twice in one day. A nurse’s aide identified him under an alias begun hours earlier, and he admitted the eight week span under different names. He listed UAW 647 Wright plant as a donor in one donation.
The President's FEPC will hear complaints March 15 to 17 in Cincinnati against eight firms including Crosley Corporation and Cam bridge Tile Manufacturing Co., alleging refusals to hire or train Negro workers. A total of 63 complaints cite discriminatory hiring practices linked to local plant policies. Malcolm Ross chairs the FEPC. John Brophy of the CIO will join the local panel.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports living costs up 2.5 percent from last year and 30.5 percent since August 1939. The data note reduced value and fewer low priced goods are not reflected.
