Allis Back-To-Work Plot Probed by Protests to Truman

Telegrams of protest were sent to President Truman by the United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers over stalling by Allis-Chalmers Co. officials and the Labor Department. Neil Brant, UK international representative, supplied transcripts of a company executive proposing to spark a back-to-work movement to shorten a strike. Walter Geist, Allis-Chalmers president, and others were overheard discussing methods to break striker morale and issue a back-to-work letter signed by Geist.

AFL Raps Unity On Picket Lines

Labor unity on Cincinnati picket lines faces a setback as the Central Labor Council votes that members must obtain permission before marching on CIO or non AFL lines. Mutual Aid members defend aiding workers but will follow AFL rules. Hearings on strikers’ charges are postponed to July 8 and 9. Norwood strike front remains quiet as about 40 pickets attend daily. No update on Milwaukee negotiations or government conciliator withdrawal.

Taft OPA Stand Draws Ire Of Local Working Families

Brewery Workers switch to CIO in referendum

The Brewery Workers voted to affiliate with the Congress of Industrial Organizations, bringing over 74 000 members nationally and 2 200 locally to CIO. The move ends AFL alignment, with history of craft division tensions since 1913 and 1941 AFL suspension. Union HQ is 2327 Vine Street with 224 US Canada locals and 111 branches in shop towns. William J. Kromelbein named general secretary treasurer after Joseph Obergfell’s death in 1945. The Gen Executive Board and quorum body in Cincinnati govern affairs. Lithographers Leave AFL for CIO After 62 Years

In Cincinnati on August 30 1884 a small group formed Local 8 of the Amalgamated Lithographers of America. Sixty two years later the ALA transferred its affiliation to the CIO after a long AFL history. CIO Urges Veterans Delegations to Meet Lausche in Columbus

William Lavelle, secretary treasurer of the Ohio CIO Council, calls local unions to send veteran delegations to meet Gov. Lausche on Tuesday July 2. He urges letters and telegrams to press for a soldiers bonus and employment compensation in the current session. Delegations should meet state senators and representatives home this weekend to gain support.
